The unconscious speaks through art. You can see it all over the world. Myth, poetry, dance, they all touch us in ways that mere rationality cannot.
I'm all for rationality, personally - I think our world needs a LOT more of it. But we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking that rational is all that we are. The power of our being, our living energy, is all in our emotions and longings and those deep elements of ourselves.
The roots of all these felt experiences of life-force are in our unconscious, and they manifest through our bodies. The sacred arts around the world are all about learning to communicate skillfully between our rational, waking mind, and this non-linear, poetic mind of dreams.
Because we can tap into inner vitality and energy, these arts are called "qigong" - working with energy, or "pranayama" releasing the life-force. The symbols, sacred gestures, mantras, songs, poems, and prayers of the world's mystics all have the effect of reaching beyond the rational and into our depths, where the life force lives.
Our bodies are largely unconscious, left to our own devices, we might just allow them to do their automatic processes. In Daoist alchemy, bringing mindful awareness to our embodiment is the art of making the unconscious conscious. They poetically referred to it as "placing fire beneath the water" - bringing lucidity into our depths.
When we understand this key of inner-communication, we can unlock the language of the world's yogic systems. Qigong is like compassionate communication within our body-mind. We use body language and presence to create a "vibe" that opens up loving dialogue. Is it any wonder, then that greater health and peace of mind will result? We're bringing our whole selves to the table.
It's in this spirit that I've decided to teach this year's 'Mastery-Path' immersion (and subsequent Instructor Certification). It's not just about mastering Qigong practices, but it's about learning how we master any sacred art. The keys are all the same. We use the symbols, sacred gestures, and methods of the Daoist alchemists, but in the end, it's your body and mind, and the whole point is to learn the inner language that works for you. To befriend yourself more deeply than ever before is the true path of mastery.
